Don’t forget the conference on aging!
For the twenty-fourth year, senior New Mexicans, professionals who work with them, and family members who care for them will gather in Glorieta, New Mexico, to learn more about how to support senior independence and longevity.
The twenty-fourth New Mexico Conference on Aging will be held August 20 to 22 at the LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center. Workshops will cover a range of topics that include financial planning, health and longevity, trends in long-term care, and the future of Medicare and Social Security. Workshop tracks will be offered to provide extensive information in the areas of caregiving for patients with Alzheimer's disease, end-of-life issues, and the rights of Diné elders.
Entertainment will span the range of cultures in New Mexico. Hispanic and Tewa storytelling, and music covering a range of genres from bluegrass to flamenco to Native American flute playing will all be offered during breaks and in the evenings.
On Tuesday, August 20, keynote speaker Maria Palacios, a Latin American poet who uses a wheelchair as the result of polio, will discuss how to break through racial, gender, and economic boundaries to grow in mutual understanding and cultural awareness.
AARP is planning a gubernatorial forum on Wednesday, August 21, and on Thursday, August 22, California gerontologist William Cone will take a humorous, informative look at preventing memory loss after forty.
For registration information, call 505-476-0100 (800-432-2080 toll-free in state) or visit www.nmaging.state.nm.us.
