Placitas Community Center August Events Calendar

The following activities are available daily Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. unless noted otherwise:

  • Open gym (exception: Monday 12:30-3 and Thursday 9-11)
  • Pool tables (exception: Monday 12:30-3 and Thursday 9-11)

WEEKLY PROGRAMS

  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Chair exercises 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  • Monday: Duplicate bridge 1-4:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday: Painting class 9:30-11:30 a.m., Wii games 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Cards 1-3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Yoga 9:30-11 a.m., beading 1-4:30 p.m. (exception-August 26 for both)
  • Friday: Scrabble 10:30 a.m.

Special Classes/Events:

The Placitas Community/Senior center is open to all community member’s for classes offered at the site. Trips and meals are offered to all seniors age 60 and above.

New activities and trips scheduled for August and September are:

• Slumping of Glass: Glass fusing has grown rapidly in popularity over the past few years. The Placitas Community Center is offering a class in the slumping of glass on August 12 at 1:00 p.m. and on August 13 to pick up your work at 10:00 a.m. Supplies needed are a clean bottle (remove labels and glue).

• On August 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Placitas Volunteer Fire Department has volunteered their time to come to the Placitas Community Center and give free health checks to senior citizens age 60+. The health checks will consist of the following: Blood pressure, lung sound, 02 Sat., blood glucose. No reservations are necessary. (These checks are scheduled once each month, on the third Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

• On August 21, the Center will host a Community Rummage/Craft Sale from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Homemade breakfast burritos will be available from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at a cost of $3.00 each. Water and sodas are $.50 each. Monies from the sale of food will be used for Senior Citizens functions. Cost for six-foot table space for senior clients is $5.00 and non-seniors is $10.00 per table space. (There are limited tables available, so you may be asked to bring your own table). For table space and/or information, call Janice or Marylou at the Center, 867-1396.

• In September, a trip to The Georgia O’Keefe Landscape Tour will be scheduled. Departure from the Center will be at 8:30 a.m. and you will return at 5:00 p.m. A $3.00 transportation donation is suggested. Lunch will be on your own. Those interested should contact Janice or Marylou at the Center to register (867-1396) and pay the cost of $25.00 per senior, by August 17. The payment is non-refundable.

August 6: Green chile chicken enchilada, pinto beans, green beans, lettuce and tomatoes, cantaloupe

August 9: Sloppy Joe, spinach, coleslaw, apple, cookie

August 10: Chicken pot pie, vegetables in pot pie, tossed salad with dressing, cottage cheese, pineapple

August 11: Lasagna, Italian vegetables, Caesar salad with dressing, garlic toast, fruit with Jell-O

August 12: Hot turkey sandwich, mashed potatoes with gravy, Capri vegetables, spinach salad with dressing, tropical fruit

August 13: Soft beef taco with salsa, pinto beans, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and onions, honeydew, cookie

August 16: Chicken and noodles, beets, garden salad with dressing, biscuit with margarine, fresh pineapple

August 17: Meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, Scandinavian vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, pears

August 18: Turkey and cheese sandwich, carrot and raisin salad, lettuce leaf, tomato slices, banana, cookie

August 19: Spaghetti with meat sauce, Italian vegetables, Caesar salad with dressing, garlic toast, peaches

August 20: Chicken salad sandwich, celery and carrot sticks, coleslaw, fruit with Jell-O

August 23: Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, Monte Carlo vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, biscuit with margarine, watermelon

August 24: Frito pie, pinto beans, California vegetables, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, mixed fruit

August 25: BBQ chicken sandwich, Capri vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, fresh grapes, cookie

August 26: Beef stroganoff, cauliflower, Caesar salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, peaches

August 27: Baked fish, steak fries, carrot coins, coleslaw, whole wheat roll with margarine, strawberry short cake

August 30: Salisbury steak, baked potato with margarine, island vegetables, spinach salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, orange

August 31: Beef and cheese pizza, green beans, garden salad with dressing, watermelon, cookie

• Milk served with each meal. Canned fruit is in light syrup.
