Visit Sandoval County pueblos for Feast Days this summer

Pueblo Feast Days are named after the Pueblos’ patron saint. These are among the few days of the year that the Pueblos are open to the public for visitors to see the reverent dances and songs performed in honor of those patron saints. Pueblo families also prepare large meals for guests that are invited to their individual homes.

The dates for each are as follows:

July 26: Santa Ana Pueblo
August 2: Jemez Pueblo
August 4: Santo Domingo Pueblo
August 15: Zia Pueblo

Sandoval County Fair returns

—Sidney Hill

We’re in the midst of summer, and it’s time to pause for some old-fashion fun at the Sandoval County Fair. The 2014 Sandoval County Fair runs July 30 through August 3 in the beautiful Village of Cuba, New Mexico.

Daily admission is five dollars for adults and three dollars for youth, 12 and under. Full fair passes are an even better deal. For ten dollars, an individual can attend all four days, while $25 dollars buys the same privilege for a family of four. Activities include a baked-goods contest, horseshoe contests, a junior horse show, livestock showings, bingo, and a two-day rodeo, with performances by the Westernaires, a precision riding team. On the final day (Saturday), there will be the County Fair Parade, as well as the crowing of the Fair Queen and her court, the continuation of the rodeo, and an evening dance in the Pavilion.

The fairgrounds are about a mile south of the intersection of Highway 550 and County Road 11 in Cuba. For more information, including a complete schedule of activities, visit the County Fair website at www.sandovalfair.org.

Tour a certified wildlife habitat garden

On Monday, August 4, families are invited to explore a wildlife habitat garden. From 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., the Xeric Garden Club of Albuquerque will give a free guided tour of its certified Wildlife Habitat Garden. The garden uses native, xeric plants to support indigenous wildlife as well as migratory birds. The docent will explain the importance of creating and preserving wildlife habitats, and how to create one at your own at home. Children of all ages are invited, too, to learn about creating wildlife habitats. Among the activities will be hand- and face-painting of butterflies, moths and flowers to illustrate how important pollinators are to our gardens. The Xeric Garden Club of Albuquerque is a nonprofit and maintains the wildlife habitat garden at the Albuquerque Garden Center 10120 Lomas NE. www.xericgardenclub.org. All ages are welcome.
