Lost dog found with help of neighbors
—Jim and Rita Peaslee Placitas
On October 7, our dog Sage escaped from home around 6:15 p.m. and was lost for twelve hours. We were frantic and searched for her until 11:30 that night, calling out her name and praying we would find her, but to no avail. When we realized she was lost, we randomly called several home owners in the area and put out an alert to be on the lookout for our little schnauzer.
We feared the worst: that she might be eaten by a coyote or run over or just lost and never found again. One of the calls I made was to Bob and Kay Upton's residence, and by some miracle, the very next morning Kay received a call from Clardel Walker (who had lost her little white spitz dog in May for sixteen days) telling her she had spotted a schnauzer at the La Puerta Realty Office but couldn't rescue her at the time because she was on her way to work. So Kay quickly called us and told us that our dog had been spotted.
On the way up there we received another call from Sarah Gilbert, who lived in the area of the real estate office. She had coaxed our scared and frightened Sage into her home and said she had her. Whew, what a relief! Sage was just as happy to see us as we were her.
We are new to the Placitas neighborhood—Trails West-Roadrunner Trail and were overwhelmed by the support many of our good neighbors—many we did not even know—who joined in on the search. We thank all of you who helped in the search for our precious dog. . .. some whom we haven't met yet (those mentioned above), and a few whom we did know, like our next-door neighbors, the Howards; Stephen Stewart, who rode his mountain bike all around the neighborhood; Jess Unrein, who drove around for hours; and Mark at the Piñon Café, for posting a lost-dog sign for us. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. It truly was a blessing and a miracle we found Sage. It was a bittersweet experience for us, for through what was a mini tragedy at the time we met many new friends. God bless you all.
