New Mexico has the largest share of working poor people in the USA. Instead of creating a useable support network for these folks' basic needs our legislators continue to uphold a sales tax system that puts an unfair additional burden on these families' backs. Sales tax on groceries has been eliminated in most states because poor people must spend a much larger share of their total income on food. A sales tax on groceries puts a heavy tax burden on the backs of people least able to bear it. To my way of thinking this is the most glaring example of the often shameless inappropriate ways in which our State and County legislators raise revenues. While the taxes raised are important to many of the services provided by government there are other viable sources that would be fairer to New Mexico's working poor.

I’m tired of these people who think that New Mexico is just like Ohio and they can waste thousands of gallons of precious water on their lawns, landscaping, swimming pools and Jacuzzis. Wake up people! Water is precious.
