Members discuss senior centers

—Bill Diven

If the people using Sandoval County’s senior centers have any gripes, the staff and the food are not among them. “The meals are exceptional,” Jermaine McGregor said in a comment echoed by others during the county’s annual public hearing on senior programs. “The staff is polite, courteous, and so respectful.”

But most important, she added, is the transportation service that gets senior residents to shopping and doctor appointments. “It’s marvelous,” McGregor said.

Those comments came during an annual public hearing held by the Sandoval County Senior Program and Share Your Care, which provides adult day care and other services for the frail, elderly, and developmentally disabled. Such hearings, surveys, and other reports are required as part of state contracts related to the federal Older Americans Act.

About 15 percent of state and county residents are 65 and older, slightly more than the national average. The hearing in Bernalillo drew around 75 county residents, caregivers, and program staff.

“They were very positive in their comments, which is always nice to hear,” Denise Montoya, the county’s executive director of senior programs said after the hearing. “It’s important for us to know where there are needs in the program… Valid criticism can help with changes in the program and what services out there are needed that we can advocate for.”

Program participants cited among other issues: new chairs at one senior center that were difficult to get into and out of; adding fresh fruit and vegetables to canned food-pantry assistance; serving mashed potatoes less often; help in dealing with rising food and medical costs as Social Security stays flat; adding beer to lunches; the limited reach of field trips; offering grief counseling as seniors lose spouses and friends; and combating depression and loneliness for seniors living alone.

One goal for the coming year is partnering with lawyers and the Thirteenth Judicial District to provide more legal services, Montoya said. And transportation is always a need given the limitations of staff and vehicles, she added.

The Placitas Senior Center won a mention for its friendly staff and exercise equipment while the Bernalillo center earned a shout out for improving the quality of its lunches.

Bernalillo also is in line for a new senior center that has been designed and is about to go out to bid. Montoya said the program hopes to break ground in the spring with construction to take about ten months. The center will occupy a 1.5-acre section of Rotary Park set aside by the town of Bernalillo in September 2014. Voters in the November election approved borrowing up to $1.85 million dollars to build the center. The Legislature previously approved funds to help design it.
