Bird Spirits
size: 48 x 72" oil on canvas

This painting was inspired by my travels through the village of Corrales
each day to my new studio. I would see the many flocks of geese and sandhill
cranes flying overhead or foraging in the fields. The birds seemed a natural
extension of my interest in painting the autumn season. The birds are
universal symbols of our ties to the spirit world.

Earth spirits, as in all my harvest paintings, are guardians of the earth.
They are ancient symbols of man's connection to nature. In prehistory, the
female figure was revered as a goddess. These goddess figures in my art are
mankind's hope for peace, tranquility and regeneration. Their job is the
safeguarding of earth's resources, including the souls of mankind
