It takes more than just training to become a true firefighter

—Sal Gullo, District Chief,    Sandoval County Fire Department District 4, Placitas

Sandoval County Fire Department District 4, Placitas, is welcoming two members of the recent graduating class of the Sandoval County Fire Department Recruit Academy. Members Perry Wiersma and Jon Whiting have now crossed the starting line and have the potential for a long career in firefighting and emergency medical service ahead of them. We congratulate them and look forward to their continued support to our community and organization.

District 4, Placitas has also started a Recruit Training Class. We have ten new members that have nine additional classes ahead of them. The training that our new members will be taking includes such topics as CPR, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Radio Operations, Firefighters First Aid and Understanding Harassment. We will be looking for these new members to complete their training sometime in early March and joining our existing 35 members in serving our community.

We have also installed a Training Officer and team to organize our training needs in our fire department. Our Member George Dahl along with the assistance of Nancy Roope and Mary Stuever will invite both instructors and our members to improve their understanding of fire and EMS skills.

Our fire station on Hwy 165 has been undergoing an improvement for several months. The construction of an additional two truck bays and two storage rooms is almost complete. The project started back in August ’09 and is looking to be placed into service soon. The space will house one of our fire engines and a rescue unit as well the storage room which will accommodate our medical supplies in a heated and air conditioned space. We are working to plan an open house event for some time in the near future, keep your eyes and ears open for the date for that event.

Our District 4, Placitas members responded to 465 calls in the year 2009. Our volunteers are here to serve our community’s emergency needs. Continuing to bring new members into our organization and deliver quality training for them is our mission. Your donations to our organization will help continue to develop the highly trained responders that we need.

Donations can be sent to: Placitas Volunteer Fire Brigade Inc., P.O. Box 567, Placitas, NM  87043.
