Kilnfired glass taught at PCC
The glass fun and fusing begins again at the Placitas Community Center, 41 Camino de Las Huertas, on May 20. With Cathryne Richards teaching, each student will learn how to cut glass, design, lay up the pieces and with a special kiln, and fire them into glorious jewelry pendants, brooches, bracelets, and earrings. Materials will be available for a $5 fee at the first class. Open workshops continue on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., where specialists will present a variety of topics on how to work with glass to create objects of beauty, working with crushed glass called frit, firing, cold working, and grinding your glass pieces, slumping or molding your piece in the kiln to finishing and marketing your jewelry.
Kiln-fired glass is an ancient art form that employs special glass called dichroic glass, which sparkles with the metals with which it is made. Two layers or more provide a canvass where you can create every color of the rainbow. Call the Community Center to reserve your space in the beginner’s class—867-1396.
Visiting artist, Nancy Howell, from her studio “The Painted Chair’ in Santa Cruz, California, will teach a mix-media mosaic class at the Placitas Community Center and in private studios the week of June 4 to 6. The class at the Placitas Center is on June 4, at 9:00 a.m. Cathryne Richards is helping coordinate the classes and will provide fused glass pieces for sale to use in individuals mosaic piece. For more information, call Cathryne at 771-3638.
“Art's Cool” at the PCC
Beginning on May 2 and running through June 6, the world of art history will be the platform for creative journeys, according to private school art director and teacher Carol Santaquilani, who will be teaching this free class at the Center. Beginning with a brief overview of a particular type of visual art, learning the era from which it evolved and the culture that inspired it, Carol says that students will create their own work of art with no judgment and no pressure from her, just the simple pleasure of reviewing what was done in the past to make art for today. Classes are on Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. If you are interested, call the Community Center at 867-1396 to reserve your spot. |
