SC Medical Center to open this summer

Quality healthcare and service to others aren’t just ideas, but a clear vision and reality for Kevin Rogols, President and Chief Executive Officer of the anticipated UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (UNM SRMC) located at Rio Rancho’s City Center, set to open in early summer 2012.

With more than 27 years of community hospital administrative experience, Rogols brings to UNM SRMC a proven track record of working with community physicians. He has special expertise in constructing and opening new community healthcare facilities. At UNM SRMC, Rogols has made timely healthcare a top priority.

“Shortly after my wife Kathy and I moved to Placitas, we wanted to establish a medical home with a local primary care physician, but found that it would be several months before we could schedule an initial visit. We phoned three other primary care physicians and experienced a similar delay. After four attempts, we finally found a primary care physician who, unfortunately, left the community just a few months later necessitating us to again search for medical care. Fortunately, we found a medical home at the new UNM Sandoval Primary Care currently located at UNM West.”

In addition to his passion for healthcare, Rogols values education and is excited to launch SRMC as a community teaching hospital. UNM SRMC will be working closely with the UNM School of Medicine as well as the UNM College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy.

“The leadership of Sandoval County and its nearly 132,000 residents have emphasized the importance of healthcare by placing their faith and trust in UNM SRMC,” Rogols said. “I am honored to serve our Sandoval County neighbors in such an important way.”

A bag of tomatillos could be one of the next targets of  emergency food preparation for the Ready Placitas class

Ready Placitas continues to get ready

On January 13, Ready Placitas will host its third food preservation class at 1:00 p.m. at the Placitas Community Center.

Nicole Lujan, Home Economist from the Sandoval County Cooperative Extension Service, will again come up from Bernalillo, to show us how to dry foods using electric dehydrators. Fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and meat will be fair game on our bill of fare thanks to her confident instructions and hands-on presentation. And, unlike in our earlier classes, we apprentices won't have to divvy up jobs of washing jars, bringing fruits or vegetables up to boil in large pots, sterilizing jars in steaming water, placing caps on jars just so—everything we had to do just to end up with delicious food in ... jars.

The event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $2. The Placitas Community Center is at 41 Camino de Las Huertas, north of the Placitas Post Office.

To RSVP, call the Placitas Community Center at 867-1396, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or contact Cosmos at 217-9384 or
