“Pinewood Derby preparations already are underway,” says Pack Master David Gardner. The Pinewood Derby races for Pack 708’s cub scouts will take place at 7:00 p.m., on January 27, at the Latter Day Saints Church in Bernalillo.

Before the competition, the scouts will meet in Leland Bowen’s Placitas workshop for the rough cutting of their racecars on January 9. The boys will have over two weeks to finetune their entries.

“We’re also proud to announce a new Webelo Leader for our Pack: my wife Pat,” Mr. Gardner announced. Mr. Gardner says she has always enjoyed the ten- to 11-year-olds, and, of course, scouting. Webelo stands for “We’ll Be Loyal Scouts.”

This past month the scouts were busy with holiday activities. For the fourth year, the Pack’s float in the Bernalillo Christmas Parade won second place in the youth groups. Also in December, the cub scouts sang a medley of Christmas favorites to the residents of the Beehive Assisted Living Homes in Bernalillo. They finished out the month on December 30 with their long anticipated historic trails tour of the town of Bernalillo.

Pack 708’s meetings are held at the LDS Church Center in Bernalillo, west of I-25 Exit 240. The weekly meetings continue to be from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Wednesdays. New scout members always are welcome in the Pack. Pack meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
