Summer is off to a great start at the Placitas Community Library. Our children have already surpassed the Summer Reading Challenge goal of more than 1,000 books and have enjoyed many outstanding programs presented by our wonderful volunteers and guest storytellers.

Come join us in July for more exciting, as well as educational, programs!

Children’s author, Lisa Goldman, returns to read her new book, The Brave Little Burro on July 23 at 10 a.m. Meet Lisa’s own little donkey, Burrito. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. This special presentation is part of our Summer Arts Program.

On July 28 at 10 a.m., we will host our Celebration of Reading, with prizes for all registered participants of our Summer Reading Challenge. We will have a puppet theater, and the refreshments will be provided by the Flying Star Café of Bernalillo. It is not too late to register for the challenge. Your child must complete a registration card, decorate a suitcase cutout, record book titles on a reading log, and present it at the library to receive stickers on the suitcase. One sticker = five books read.

All of these programs are free of charge and have been provided by various community groups, including the Jardineros of Placitas, who donated the prizes for the Summer Reading Challenge “goodie bags,” as well as books and other materials. The Flying Star Café in Bernalillo also donated items for the bags. The members of the Creative Spirits of Placitas (Anna Goodridge, Lisa Goldman, and Geri Verble), donated their time, materials, and artistic expertise for the Summer Arts Program. Deborah Gullo of Yoga Crossroads provided the yoga sessions, and, of course, our magnificent children’s services committee at the library, who also donated their time, materials, and expertise to provide many tremendous programs for our young patrons.

Call the library at (505) 867-3355, or visit our Web site at for more information and flyers.
