Paper artist featured at Placitas Community Library

—Anne Grey Frost

Barbara Barkley has been making paper for over 25 years. She was originally taught by Japanese papermakers in the ancient process of making paper. By gathering long, strong-fibered plants, she creates paper by cooking the plants in lye for several hours, then forming the paper by hand beating and floating it in vats of water. Traditional Western fibers are also used in her work. Flax, hemp, linen, cotton rag, and sisal are broken down into fine fibers. She then adds natural earthen pigments and quality light-fast pigments. Each fiber and color lends its own character to the final artwork. Additional textural materials may be added, creating layer upon layer to further enliven the surface texture of her design. With the exception of occasional added precious metals, all color comes from the layering of colored fibers.

Barkley’s work has received numerous awards and is represented in public and private collections and in galleries.
