Summer vacation on the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands

—Marta Call

Warmer weather is on its way, so it’s time to start planning those summer vacations. Camping is one of the many attractions on the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands. There are over one-and-a-half million acres of land and you can camp at developed campgrounds and designated dispersed sites.

The mountain ranges of the four forested districts of Cibola National Forest include: the Datil, Gallinas, Magdalena, Bear, San Mateo, Zuni, Sandia, and Manzano mountains, as well as the Withington and Apache Kid wildernesses. These are all located in central New Mexico. The Cibola NF also includes 263,954 acres of national grasslands in northeastern New Mexico, western Oklahoma, and northwestern Texas.

Do you fish? Fishing opportunities are available at Bluewater and McGaffey Lakes in the Zuni Mountains in New Mexico. Nearby attractions also include the Sandia Peak Ski Area in the Sandia Mountains, the Very Large Array near the Magdalena Ranger District, prehistoric ruins, ice caves, lava flows, and Indian pueblos.

Are you a mountain biker? The Cibola National Forest’s mountain ranger districts have many different mountain bike trails. Plan your trip now and visit the scenic lands of New Mexico.
