Bernalillo FFA takes on Nationals

—Amanda Jaramillo

Bernalillo High School was represented by the Bernalillo Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter at the 2016 New Mexico FFA State Convention. FFA is the largest student organization in the country with over six hundred thousand students. Bernalillo has been rebuilding their program for the past three years and currently has 42 members and growing. Since 2013 we have had success at the local and state level. Recently, six students attended the New Mexico FFA State Convention in which they participated in workshops, competitions, and received awards.

Lorenzo Yardman and Lidia Baldonado represented Bernalillo High School by competing in the leadership career development event known as job interview. The purpose of job interview as defined by New Mexico FFA is to develop, practice, and demonstrate skills needed in seeking employment in the agricultural industry. Lorenzo Yardman and Lidia Baldonado competed at the district level, placing second and fourth individually and qualified to compete at the state level.

Lorenzo Yardman placed first in the state and will be competing at the national level in Indianapolis, Indiana, in October. This has been the first time in many years that Bernalillo FFA has walked across the stage at NM FFA State Convention and the first time that Bernalillo has taken first place in a leadership career development event. Lorenzo will be competing against fifty other students across the nation in job interview at the national convention held in October. We are extremely proud of Lorenzo and wish him luck at nationals.

Leadership Sandoval County Class of 2017 accepting applications

—Susan Sheridan

Applications are now being accepted for the Class of 2017 Leadership Sandoval County (LSC), a program of the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce. Leadership Sandoval County is open to any individual interested in personal and professional growth, community service, and the development of leadership skills. This ten-month program is uniquely designed to engage emerging and existing leaders through civic leadership development to benefit the Sandoval County region.

The selection process is held in July and August, with applicants going through a personal interview process with the LSC selection committee. The selection committee will then select the final class participants from the combined review of applications and interview scores. Finalists will be notified that they have been selected to participate in the Class of 2017 in mid-August. The first session, Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14. The class is limited to thirty participants, enabling participants the opportunity to network and work together to accomplish the variety of community and leadership building exercises during the ten-month program.

Applications are available online at www.rrrcc.org. Drop off application to the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce Office, 4001 Southern Boulevard SE Suite B in Rio Rancho or email to ssheridan@rrrcc.org.

More summer fun awaits the Scouts

“In addition to the Placitas Independence Day Parade, we have an overnight camp and a ball game planned for July,” says Cub Master David Gardner. The scouts usually ride in the float they decorate for the Placitas Parade on July 4. On July 15 and 16, Pack 708’s cub scouts and their families will have a family overnight campout. They will cook their meals on the campfire, put up their tents for the night, and learn more about living in the wild. The overnight will be great opportunity for the scouts to apply some of the lessons they learned at their two Boy Scout day camps in June.

The month’s other outdoor event, perhaps a ball game, will occur during the pack’s monthly pack meeting on July 27. Pack 708’s meetings are held at the LDS Church Center in Bernalillo, west of I-25’s Exit 240. The weekly meetings occur from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. New scout members are always welcome in the Pack. Planning meetings with parents are held on the month’s fourth Tuesday.

Friends Of Youth, post offices, scouts help community

“Our Friend of Youth award-winner Mrs. Mangham, Bernalillo Middle School’s Principal, suggested we solicit school supply donations for the middle school. Of course, we said yes,” says charter club member Venus Sanford. “Two of our other 2016 Friend of Youth award winners, the staff at the Bernalillo and Placitas Post Offices said yes, too, and will be partnering with us in this new program.”

“To collect school supplies, we’re using the same method we use to collect food for our annual Thanksgiving Sharing Program,” added David Gardner, Coronado Optimist Club Vice President and Cub Master. Cub Scout Pack 708 is sponsored by the Optimist Club.

In mid-July the scouts will distribute their yellow donation boxes to the Post Offices in Bernalillo and Placitas. Donations will be collected weekly until early August when the supplies will be bundled up and turned over to the school.

Bernalillo Middle School’s needs include the following: composition notebooks (language arts), four-pack highlighter sets (pink, orange, yellow, green), 12-pack colored pencils, spiral notebooks, red pens, black pens, blue pens, dozen boxes #2 pencils, pencil pouches, two-inch binders (language arts/math), post-it notes, binder divider packs, packages of graph paper, large boxes of tissue, pocket folders with fasteners, glue sticks, scissors, packs of loose leaf paper, large packages of Clorox wipes, flash drives, trapper keepers, TI83 Graphing Calculator (Algebra I only), TI30XIIS Calculator (optional for math).
