Pastel Paintings by Bianca Härle — Studio 9 of 1
Bianca is a native of Germany, where she grew up in a small rural village with the incredible art and architecture of antique Europe all around her. She credits that environment and many visits to her father’s building projects during her teen years with kindling an early interest in architecture, and other arts like sculpting, painting, dancing and music. It was her interest in Architecture that eventually led her to the University of New Mexico to study this field, and she’s been an adopted “native” to this area ever since.
After completing what she calls her “degree in endurance”, she took several extended journeys to the Central American Caribbean; It was there that she reconnected with her passion for painting and fell in love (the Caribbean will do that…) with the medium of soft pastels. She likes the directness of this medium, and the soft buttery quality and incredible vibrant color. When she returned to New Mexico she established her studio in Placitas and made painting a major part of her life.
In her paintings, Bianca is mostly interested in simple compositions, in bold, intense color and high contrast. She considers her work contemporary images of the Southwest, though she may do figure work or a still life; but more often she explores the richness of light and shadow in the wonderful adobe architecture of this region. Her latest work also has its source in this architecture, but she abstracts the images somewhat, lending them a more mysterious quality; Then, a window in a building or a passage in a wall may become, in her words, “an opening to another realm to ponder”.
Bianca is a regular on the Placitas Studio tour, has shown in regional juried shows and group showings, and has had several solo shows in New Mexico. Her work can be seen at Angus McDougall Gallery and currently also at Katrina Lasko Gallery, both in Bernallio.
