Summer programs for kids at the Placitas Community Library

—Nancy Guist, Children’s Services Coordinator, Placitas Community Library

This summer, the Placitas Library will have a variety of programs available for children of all ages. Our traditional Summer Reading Program revolves around the theme “Be Creative @ Your Library.”

We will be meeting every Thursday, beginning June 4, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., and ending August 6 with our Summer Reading Celebration. The program serves two age groups: three- to six-year-olds and seven- to ten (plus)-year-olds. Our first program will offer a variety of experiences in Creative Dramatics—everything from imaginative theater games to spontaneous play productions, plus, of course, a wonderful selection of books to share.

For a schedule of the topics offered over the summer, please stop by the library to pick up a flier or check out our website at placitaslibrary.com. Of particular note is the program on July 2 when we will have a special performer—Jubalation and Jubil’Kids, a children/teen folk instrumental group—which will perform Celtic, bluegrass, and folk music.

The Placitas Library is also offering for the first time two other very special programs. The first of these is a Children’s Creativity Workshop conducted by a local artists group, the Creative Spirits of Placitas. This workshop will be held at the Placitas Library on Saturday, June 20 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. It is designed for children seven to ten years of age. The purpose of the workshop is to encourage creativity in children. Emphasis will be on exploring and discovering the pleasure of the creative process. Final products will not be stressed. Children will be using tempera paint and paper to make their inventive creations. The class is limited to twelve students, so please stop by the library soon to register your child.

Also this summer, the Placitas Community Library will be presenting Story-Time Yoga for two age groups: four- to six-year-olds and seven- to twelve-year-olds. This program begins with a story from various worldwide cultures and helps children expand their worldview. Yoga poses are integrated throughout the story. Closure includes discussion followed by learning the art of relaxation. Ages four to six will meet June 2 and 16 and July 7 and 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Ages seven through twelve will meet June 9 and 23 and July 14 and 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Class size is limited. Please register at the library.

Finally, the library will again be sponsoring the Summer Reading Challenge. Children of all ages are welcome to register at the library. Once they have done so, they will receive a packet which includes a reading log, in which they will keep a record of books read (or read to them) during the summer. Everyone’s reading will contribute to this summer’s library goal of one thousand books read. Watch the giant paint palette in the children’s room collect colorful stickers as we work toward our goal. We will celebrate everyone’s reading at our Summer Reading Celebration on August 6 with a party, prizes, and more.

For further information regarding any of the above programs, call the Placitas Community Library at 867-3355.
