Where in the World Is It?

—Bill Dunmire

The spectacular Rio Grande Gorge, known as the "Taos Box," is a world-class stretch of whitewater a few miles west of Taos.

From the vehicle and pedestrian bridge you can peer straight down to the river flowing through a 650-foot-deep box canyon carved in basalt lava rock. For rafters and kayackers, this run is the most challenging in our state.

This photo, by Chris Bauman, is from Bill Dunmire's new book, New Mexico's Living Landscapes: A Roadside View. Check out his website at to learn about the book and of upcoming events related to it.

Kiln-fired glass class at Center

Kiln-fired glass is an ancient art form that employs special glass called dichroic glass which sparkles with the metals with which it is made. Two layers or more provide a canvas on which you can create every color of the rainbow. Fused glass jewelry pieces are easy to create. Materials will be available for a small fee at the first class.

The glass fun and fusing begins again at the Placitas Community Center, 41 Camino de Las Huertas. Cathryne Richards will be presenting a beginners class from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on June 12. There is also an open workshop on every second and fourth Tuesday, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Participants will learn how to cut glass, design, lay up the pieces, and, with a special kiln, fire them into glorious jewelry pendants, brooches, bracelets, and earrings. We will also plan a field trip to gather supplies and ideas later in the month.

This year there will be special guest speakers once a month, an artist’s “show ‘n tell,” and specialists who will present a variety of topics on how to work with glass in creating objects of beauty. Everything from working with crushed glass called frit, firing, slumping, and molding your pieces in the kiln, to finishing and marketing your jewelry will be presented over the course of the open workshops.

Call 867-1396 to reserve your space in the beginner’s class on June 12 at 1:00 p.m.
