Statement from Mayor Hull on death of Rio Rancho Police Officer

—Annemarie L. García, Communications and Information Manager, City of Rio Rancho

The following statement is from Rio Rancho Mayor Greggory D. Hull on the death of Officer Gregg “Nigel” Benner:

“Officer Gregg “Nigel” Benner was killed while in the line of duty. Officer Benner was a dedicated military veteran and law enforcement officer and his tragic death is deeply saddening to the tight-knit community of Rio Rancho. The City of Rio Rancho mourns his untimely death and I urge community members to keep Officer Benner’s family in their thoughts and prayers. Our police officers hold a special place in our hearts as they lay their lives on the line every day protecting our safety and this is a stark reminder of their sacrifice.”

During the evening hours of May 25, 2015, Officer Benner was involved in a shooting on Southern Boulevard and Pinetree Road in Rio Rancho, and died as a result.

Specific details of the shooting are under investigation and will be released by the Police Department Public Information Office when available. All future inquiries should be directed to the Police Department Public Information Office.

Mayor Hull has ordered for flags to be flown at half-staff.
