New Bernalillo Senior Center close to construction kick off

Signpost Staff

The property lease is signed, the bids are in, and construction of the new Sandoval County senior center in Bernalillo looks to be ready to go this summer.

The $1.85 million dollar project adjacent to Rotary Park in southern Bernalillo will replace the current town-owned structure built about seventy years ago near Camino del Pueblo and U.S. Highway 550. The town also owns the 1.5-acre site, which the county will occupy under a 99-year lease, and the county will own the building.

“The current location is maintained by the town,” Tommy Mora, the county’s director of public works, recently told town councilors. “The town will save some money from not having to maintain it.”

The lease includes an annual rent of $16,200 dollars, although expenses paid by the county for utilities, taxes, maintenance, and repairs are expect to more than offset that amount.

Contractor bids were due in late April, and county staff is still reviewing them, county spokesman Sidney Hill told the Signpost. The target for presenting a contract with the winning bidder to county commissioners for their approval is late June or early July, he added.

Once construction begins, the contract calls for the job to be done in three hundred days.

The new senior center, at 7,200 square feet, includes an exercise area, room for classes and social activities, and a commercial kitchen to prepare meals for members and homebound seniors in Bernalillo, Placitas, Algodones, Peña Blanca, Jemez Springs, and other communities.

The current center prepares meals for 350 people daily, according to Denise Montoya, who administers the county senior-services program.

Looking for volunteers

—Janice Mortensen

The Placitas Community Center is looking for someone to volunteer to teach a 6-week course in Spanish.

Also, please come and join the Project Linus group at the center. We meet every Wednesday morning to make blankets for children that are in need in the county. We could use the help in any way that you prefer, whether it be using a sewing machine, cutting fabric, knitting, crocheting, or helping in any way to create a blanket.

For further information, contact the Placitas Community Center at 867-1396 and pick up the complete newsletter at site located at 41 Camino De Las Huertas.
