Where in the world is it?

This photo is from New Mexico's Living Landscapes: A Roadside View, by William W. Dunmire ( Bill will be presenting a book-signing for his book on Saturday, March 24, from noon to 3:00 p.m., at Gene and Linda McClain's Arte de Placitas Gallery in Homestead Village, Placitas.

Answer: La Ventana Arch, with an opening 125 feet high and 165 feet long, is the second largest in the state. (The largest is the seldom-visited Snake Bridge on the Navajo Indian Reservation, just east of the Arizona border.) Sculpted in sandstone by wind and water, La Ventana Arch is on the east side of the lava flows within El Malpais National Monument—about 20 miles south of Grants on NM 117. The rumpled-looking shiny black lava here is from a series of volcano eruptions, the most recent of which occurred about 3,000 years ago.

Smart Shopping teaches food skills at the Placitas Community Center

ReadyPlacitas hosted Sandoval County Home Economist, Nicole Lujan, on February 13 as she presented Heart Healthy Cooking at Placitas Community/Senior Center. Participants learned that five thousand people die from foodborne illness every year and picked up “key recommendations” for their own food safety. The various fats and oils were explored and participants found out which ones can be cooked with to maintain a happy heart. Nicole presented an exercise program that might lower the risk of cardiovascular disease: easy exercises to do in comfort at home.

On March 12, Lujan will present Smart Shopping to answer many questions such as, Have you ever gotten overwhelmed at the grocery store with all the different food labeling? Come learn how to be a smart shopper. Have high blood pressure? Be careful about the amount of sodium in your diet and consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day. Let’s use more spices in our cooking and less salt. We’ll prepare some tasty salt free dips and appetizers.

Event to be held at the Placitas Community/Senior Center, 41 Camino de Las Huertas (north of the Post Office) at 1:00 p.m.
