County Treasurer’s Office announces reduced fees for electronic tax payments

The Sandoval County Treasurer’s Office has announced a new, reduced fee schedule for paying property taxes online, over the phone, or at point-of-sale with a credit card, debit card, or electronic check.

Online payments may be submitted using a VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, bank debit card, or by electronic transfer from a checking account. Taxpayers are able to print a transaction receipt or request an email notification as confirmation of payment.

Property tax payments also are accepted via the automated telephone service at 1-866-873-0944. This service also accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, bank debit card, or electronic checking account transfers. Taxpayers are provided with a confirmation number upon completion of the process for verification purposes.

“We issued a Request for Proposals from companies who could handle this form of payment processing, and ultimately were able to negotiate lower rates with the winning bidder, FIS. I am pleased that we were able to makes this service fee less expensive for our taxpayers,” said Sandoval County Treasurer Laura M. Montoya.

Under the new schedule, anyone paying taxes by credit card will see a fee of 2.37 percent of the payment added to the total amount due. Debit card transactions will incur a fee of $3.75 per transaction, and checking account transfers will incur a fee of $1.25 per transaction as opposed to $1.75 in previous years.

For example, if your total tax amount is five hundred dollars, the total charge is computed as follows:

Sandoval County does not receive any proceeds from these “convenience fees.” All fees collected are applied to transaction costs incurred for processing the payment. Government entities are prohibited from paying the “convenience fee.”

Taxpayers also should note that paying taxes online requires the use of a browser that is compatible with the latest e-commerce security protocols. Such browsers include Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 11 or later or other browsers that are complaint with Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols.
