Wednesdays: Problems with Alcohol? Thinking Straight, Alcoholics Anonymous Step Study Meeting, 6:00 p.m., every Wednesday, now held at the Old Convent, 264 Camino del Pueblo, across from the Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Second and fourth Tuesdays of each month: The Bernalillo/Placitas Relay for Life holds planning meetings in the Bernalillo Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. Relay for Life is an annual overnight event held in Bernalillo to benefit cancer research and support. 867-7410.

April 30 through May 2: New Mexico Horse Fair. Kids’ Corral, trade show, barrel racing, AQHA Versatility Rand Horse clinic and competition, vaulting clinic, breed demonstrations, educational seminars, nationally known equine clinicians and trainers. $5 per day; ten and under free; Friday night free. May 1: Dia de los Niños. Storytelling, children’s book readings and presentations by local authors, piñata breaking, a “book walk, performances by local youth, free refreshments, goodie bags. Sponsored by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in partnership with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, and Head Start. 1 to 5 p.m. National Hispanic Cultural Center. 246-2261.

May 1 and 2: The Sixth Annual Corrales Art/Studio Tour. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This free self-guided event features open studios and galleries showing original work in paint, prints, ceramics, glass, wood, fiber, furniture, jewelry, photography. Wine tasting at local wineries. Specials at restaurants, shops, historical sites. Corrales Road now designated a National Historic Byway. Pick up map along the way. 898-1573.

May 2: Ed Blumenfeld will host a tour of Kuaua Pueblo in Bernalillo at the May meeting of the Sandoval County Historical Society. The public is invited to this free program. 2:00 p.m. at the Sandoval Historical Society Museum (a.k.a. the DeLavy House) on Edmonds Road just west of the Coronado Monument. 867-2755.

May 4 through 29: Absentee/In-person voting for June 1 primary election. Polls will be open in the County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 29. Voting also possible at alternate site in the San Ysidro Village Offices from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, May 15 to 29; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays May 15, 22, and 29. May 9: Opening of “From Above: Images of a Storied Land” at the Albuquerque Museum. 60 large-scale photographs by Adriel Heisey give an eagle's perspective of the desert Southwest. Captured from an ultralight airplane. Family art activities related to the exhibit. 1 to 4 p.m. Show runs through September 26, 2004. Daily docent-guided tours begin May 16 at 2 p.m. 243-7255,

May 12: Sandoval County Lodger's Tax Advisory Board Meeting, 4:00 p.m. Sandoval County Visitor's Center, 243 Camino del Pueblo. 867-8687.

May 15: Placitas Appreciation Day at Homestead Village in Placitas. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Arts and crafts booths, FREE hamburgers and beverages, live music, animal adoptions, information booths, fire department demonstrations, the Roadrunners Porsche Car Club Show, and much more. A free annual community event.

May 15: Grand opening of Placitas Library. Just west of Homestead Village in Placitas across Tierra Madre Road. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Book sale, door prizes, free refreshments. Children’s story time at 1 p.m.

May 15: Placitas Pet Parade at Placitas Library (see above). 10 a.m. Parade travels from the library to Homestead Village and back. Live music, animal adoptions, parade costume prizes. A free community event. 867-7471, 440-6003.

May 15: Heritage Day at Casa San Ysidro. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Albuquerque Art Museum’s historic house located in the village of Corrales. Live music, art demonstrations, and children's activities. Free. 243-7255,

May 16: The Sandoval County Historical Society will host a field trip to San Marcos Pueblo—a pre-revolt pueblo—in the Galisteo Basin. Participants should meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Sandoval Historical Society Museum on Edmonds Road in Bernalillo for carpooling. 867-2755.

May 18: "Stroke: Secondary Prevention" is the topic of the next lecture in the 2004 Stroke Educational Series sponsored by the American Stroke Association and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. 6 p.m. at HealthSouth, 7000 Jefferson NE, Albuquerque. May 23: Placitas Artists Series presents Willy Sucre and Friends playing string quartets of Verdi, Gershwin and Kreisler.
