Come early to get a free children’s book! Books will be distributed, one per child, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Placitas Community Library is proud to announce that we have been selected to receive the 2008 “We the People Bookshelf,” a collection of seventeen books on the “Created Equal” theme. This program, presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association, encourages young people to read and understand great literature, while exploring themes in American history. Look for this outstanding collection of books, currently displayed in the children’s room.

The last preschool story time for the 2007/2008 school year will be Thursday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. The final bilingual story hour for the school year will be on Wednesday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. On June 5, our Summer Reading Program will begin at 9:00 a.m. It will be held every Thursday morning through August 7, and is open to all ages. Placitas Elementary School is at 5 Calle del Carbon in the Village of Placitas.

Placitas area pets go online

Placitas Animal Rescue recently has joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet. The site currently has over 250,000 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously.

More than 10,800 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. Placitas Animal Rescue pets can be viewed at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NM115.html. A potential adopter enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the zip code entered. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies.

Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jared and Betsy Saul to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets. Since its inception, the site has facilitated approximately fifteen million adoptions, making it the most life-saving initiative in animal welfare.
