First Tuesday: Albuquerque Newcomers Club Welcoming Coffee. 10 a.m. Learn of the Club’s many varied activities. Membership open to residents who have lived in the Albuquerque area (including Sandoval County) for five years or less, or who are having major changes in their lives. Saturdays: Casa Rosa Food Bank. Open 9-11 a.m. Held in the pink house east of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church at 640 Highway 165, six miles east of I-25. This community outreach program provides nonperishable food items as well as dairy, frozen meats, and fresh produce as available for Placitas residents in need. Donations and volunteers welcome.

May 2: Monthly meeting of the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society and stargaze. 8 p.m. Held at the Rainbow Park Observatory (301 Southern Boulevard, SE, Rio Rancho). Parking is available in a parking lot in front of Rainbow Pool. The observatory is located behind Rainbow Pool. This will be the last meeting before our summer break in June and July. Meetings will start again in August. Telescopes provided by members of the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society will show views of various planets and the Moon, as well as various nebula, star clusters, and galaxies. May 3: Public forum to present task force report on free-roaming horses of Placitas. 9-noon. Held at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church, 7 Paseo de San Antonio, in Placitas. Participation will be limited to the size of the church sanctuary, and community members will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the event. The event is free.

May 3: Chatter at the rail yards. 5 p.m. A soaring classical music concert will be held at the Blacksmith Shop at the Albuquerque Rail Yards, First Street, at Hazeldine Ave SW. Performing will be the Chatter Ensemble, featuring David Felberg, Solo Violin; Ruxandra Marquardt, Solo Violin; and Conor Hanick, piano and harpsichord. Tickets are $15 dollars for adults, nine for students, and five for children. May 7: Jardineros de Placitas monthly meeting. 9:30 a.m. Held at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. Joe and Althea Cajero, award-winning artists, will discuss Native Art: The Process of Creativity and Adapting to a Changing Market. Jardineros de Placitas is a social, benevolent and charitable community-based organization for residents of Placitas. May 31: A walk through Placitas history. 10-noon. The third-of-a-mile walk will proceed along the Paseo de San Antonio. Meet at the San Antonio Catholic Mission Social Center on Paseo de San Antonio in the Village. While the walk is only a short distance, it is one-way. You may want to arrive a little early at the Mission to arrange carpools to drop off a car or two at the Presbyterian Church in which to return to the Mission at the conclusion of the walk. Comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen are recommended.

June 7: Sixteenth annual Albuquerque Folk Festival. 10:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Held at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. Parking and camping are free.
