—Signpost Staff

A Placitas man hiking in the Sandia Mountains foothills died from injuries suffered in a fall, according to the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators reported Adrian Durán and a companion were off-trail and descending a steep slope on March 29 when he lost his footing and fell hard onto rocks. An off-duty paramedic, who responded from nearby, began efforts to resuscitate Durán, but the medic and additional rescuers were unable to revive him.

The incident happened above Forest Road 445, the loop south State Route 165 near mile marker 3.

Durán was 58, according to his published obituary, although the sheriff’s office reported his age as 59. He was a native of Placitas, the son of Arsenio and Valentina Durán, and a 25-year member of Ironworkers Local 495.

“Adrian was very family oriented, who loved spending time with his brothers and taking care of his grandsons,” the obituary stated. “He enjoyed hunting, camping, getting wood, and partying.”

A funeral Mass was celebrated on April 8 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, and he was buried in the Placitas Catholic Cemetery. He is survived by a son, three daughters, and five grandchildren, his mother, five brothers and three sisters.
