Alzheimer’s/Dementia caregiver support group starts locally

Coming soon to Placitas, Bernalillo, and Northern Rio Rancho, is a new caregiver’s support group. If you are a caregiver, put this date on your calendar.

New Mexico has 37,000 Alzeimer’s patients and 106,000 unpaid caregivers and there are many other dementia patients and caregivers unknown, undiagnosed, and unaccounted for. There is help available to those caregivers. The Alzeimer’s Association of NM offers many services, educational programs, and support of various kinds for the caregivers who need more information and emotional support while traveling the isolated and lonely caregiving journey.

A support group can be the best environment to learn how to cope with and obtain more skills and knowledge to care for a loved one, and a place to share experiences with others going through the same experience.

Jerry Ballew, Placitas resident, cared for his wife for ten and a half years and is the facilitator for this new group here in our area. Mr. Ballew cautions caregivers not to shy away from the term “support group,” especially men who often think it to be a sign of weakness to seek assistance. Ballew acknowledges that, on the contrary, it takes a brave man to accept the reality of the painful and sad reality of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias. He further comments that every caregiver dealing with these deadly diseases will require help throughout the journey.

Ballew adds, “I am eternally grateful that I found my way into a caregiver support group eight years ago. It changed my outlook and understanding and our remaining life together.”

Even if your loved one may not have a definitive diagnosis of their condition, Mr. Ballew encourages you to come to the first group meeting. It could help direct your pathway to assistance and education.

The first meeting will be held at the Placitas Community Library, 453 NM Highway 165, on May 21, from 10:00 to noon. If you have any questions, call 867-4553.
