Cub Scouts create handmade orchestra

—Suzann Owings

Pack 708’s cub scouts are practicing their own cheerful music on instruments they have made themselves.

“We have percussion, string, and wind instruments,” says Pack Master David Gardner. The cub scouts created drums, shakers with rice or rocks inside, kazoos made from toilet paper rolls and wax paper, and three-string guitars made from very nice, donated, wooden cigar boxes.

Perhaps the scouts will bring their cheerful music to Carroll and Bernalillo Elementary Schools for Recruitment Day on May 5. The Pack also will be recruiting at the Fire House in Placitas.

The cub scouts will help in Rio Rancho on May 7 at the Great American Clean-up, one of their favorite annual events. Another favorite annual event is the scouts’ participation in Bernalillo’s Memorial Day Parade and services—held on May 30. Before the end of May, the pack will take a three-mile hike along the Rio Grande from Algodones to Bernalillo. The scouts also will be readying themselves for their summer day-camps, June 21-22 and June 14-17.

Pack 708’s weekly meetings are held at the LDS Church Center in Bernalillo, west of I-25’s Exit 240, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. New scout members always are welcome in the Pack. Planning meetings with parents are held on the month’s fourth Tuesday. For further information about the Cub Scouts, contact David Gardner at 867-4689 and/or Snow Watson, Coronado Optimist Club’s Scout Liaison, at 867-2047.
