Placitas Holiday Sale celebrates a milestone

—Bunny Bowen
This is a special year for the annual Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Sale: it is our silver anniversary! That's right, for twenty-five years people from Placitas and the surrounding area have marked the beginning of the holiday season by visiting this popular event. Always the weekend before Thanksgiving, this year it will be Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at three locations in the village: Anasazi Fields Winery, the Big Tent, and the Placitas Elementary School. Colorful signs and banners will mark the way.

Many of the artists are from Placitas, but others bring work from studios all around the state. Ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, prints, paintings, batik, leather, photographs, glass, baskets, metalwork, clothing, gourd art, books, and more will be offered. Look for many special items created just for the sale at affordable prices.

A jury selected the exhibitors from an ever growing number of artists who submitted slides of their work. The organizers feel that by maintaining the number of artists at about seventy, they can assure high quality and variety.

Twenty-five years ago, Placitas was a small village. Ranchos de Placitas was just beginning to develop. Spec houses were appearing. Artists and crafters had moved to the area for the inspiration and quietude it provided. This combination gave birth to the Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Fair. The artists needed a venue for showing and selling their art, and the new houses provided space for the artists and an opportunity for the builders to showcase their houses. In those early days, some artists found themselves displaying their work in bathrooms and kitchens. Eventually the number of artists outgrew the houses and the show moved to its present locations.

Anasazi Fields Winery will be offering tours of the winery, as well as free wine tasting. Wines available by the case, bottle, or glass will include two grape-based wines (Blanco Seco and Rojo Seco), 1997 Apricot, 2000 Peach, 2001 Plum, and 2002 Raspberry. The winery will be featuring their newly released 2004 American Cranberry Wine, continuing a local holiday-dinner tradition.

Vintner and wood artist Jim Fish invites you to enjoy a hot spicy drink of mulled cranberry wine by the kiva fireplace inside. More information about the wines and the winery is at anasazifieldswinery.com.

Also at the winery will be gourmet marinated organic goat cheeses, by Nancy Coonridge, as well as special chocolates made with chile, pecans, and coffee beans by Amour Chocolates.

At Placitas Elementary School, Geri Aragon will offer burritos and other goodies—her cinnamon rolls and fritters are a local favorite at the Bernalillo Growers' Market. Geri has been catering since age three, when she helped her grandmother prepare tamales for the New Mexico State Fair. Also at the school, PES parents will hold a bake sale. Across the road at the Big Tent, the Presbyterian Church will sell their own delicious frozen chile, Just Coffee, and handmade Christmas gift bags to benefit Habitat for Humanity and other mission projects.

The Placitas Holiday Sale is once again sponsoring a raffle of artwork to benefit the arts and literature programs at the Placitas Elementary School. The public can purchase $1 tickets for a chance to win; all proceeds will go to the school, where the donated works will be on display. Last year's raffle produced $1,010, which was used to commission a beautiful tile mural by Ophelia Cornet, now installed on the front of the school building.

The Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Sale is sponsored by the Placitas MountainCraft and Soiree Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the community, the arts, and artists. Maps and information about the artists, their work, and locations can be found at PlacitasHolidaySale.com.

Special thanks from the board of the Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Sale

We would like to thank all the great people in our community who help make the Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Sale happen.

Many don't realize that this event is organized and put together by local artists. Special thanks go to the committee members—Bunny Bowen, Mary Hofmann, Andi Callahan, and Jon and Nancy Couch—who have donated their valuable time to organize this event and make it a quality art show.

We also thank our gracious hosts, Jim Fish and his partners at Anasazi Fields Winery; Placitas Elementary School principal Daniel MacEachen, and Vivian DeLara, school secretary; and the members of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church, who prepare the tent site each year.

And thanks to these folks who help us get ready for the show: John Roth, who furnishes the tent with electricity; Dee Christmann, who organizes the art raffle; Alex Perez, who takes care of the school; and Kate Guidei, our tent manager.

We also thank the Signpost and its publishers, Barb and Ty Belknap, for their help and support in publicizing the Placitas Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Sale.

It's impossible to mention everyone, so we want to say Many thanks! to all who have volunteered their time to make this such a great show.
