October 3, 4, 5 and 10, 11, 12: 15th Annual Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival at the southwest corner of I-25 and Paseo Del Norte. The premier juried arts and crafts event in this area. Activities include Artists at Work, Entertainment, Just for Kids, and Food. A portion of the gate receipts, booth space, and artists’ sales is donated to Casa Angelica silent auction. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission $5 for adults; six-day passes available; children under 12 admitted free.
October 4: Coronado State Monument celebrates Native American cultures, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portal open for vendors to sell their arts and crafts. Blacksmithing and hunting techniques (rabbit stick and atlatl). Tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reservations required, with a limit of 25 per tour. Monument is off I-25 on Highway 550. October 4: Coronado State Monument annual Native American and Spanish Arts and Craft Fair, a celebration of Native American and Spanish cultures. Handmade Southwestern items for sale by local artisans. Learn how the ancient people made hunting tools. Luther Rivera demonstrates flintknapping skills. Monument staff demonstrates atlatl throwing, native games, carding, and weaving activities. October 4: “Society Defined” cultural exhibit opening. 10 a.m. to noon. “Society Defined” describes the life of Hispanic residents of northern New Mexico in 1790. Exhibit panels present text and images portraying blacksmiths, carpenters, farmers, ranchers/shepherds, day laborers. Activites include a churro sheep pelt and furniture that can be reconstructed.
