October events at the Placitas Community Library for children and families
—Judy Gajkowski
Halloween is fast approaching and the Placitas Community Library invites everyone—children and adults—to stop by the Library for a Halloween treat. The Library pumpkin will be filled with goodies from October 27 through October 31.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, comes right after Halloween, but it’s a very different celebration. This tradition comes from Mexico and is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd each year. It is a time to remember family members and friends who have died but who still live in our memories. Altars are set up in homes with photos and favorite foods of those people. Flowers and candles are also used to honor these special people who are no longer with us.
We will set up an altar on Saturday, October 31 in the Children’s Room and welcome everyone to stop by and experience this wonderful tradition. Take-home information material about Día de los Muertos and instructions on how to set up your own home altar will be available at the Library from October 27 through the 31st. Next year, when we have more space in our beautiful new building, we plan to offer a workshop on Día de los Muertos customs and altar creation.
There’s even more going on in October at the Library:
Kids’ Book Club meets on Tuesday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the Library We’ll be discussing A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.
Preschool Story Time at the Library will be held on Thursday, October 8 and Thursday, October 22 at 10:30 a.m.
Don’t miss these fun activities!

Got tricky homework?
The Loma Colorado Main Library has answers to tricky school assignments—like science experiments—for students who are having difficulty. The Homework League, composed of Rio Rancho National Honor Society students, is available on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Children’s Program Room of the library. The students are ready to help with reading assistance, math tutoring, science fair help, and general homework aid. For information, call Youth Services at 891-5013, extension 3032. The Loma Colorado Main Library is located at 755 Loma Colorado Road NE in Rio Rancho. |
