Second Mondays: Rio Rancho Art Association monthly membership meeting. 6:30-8:30 p.m. RRAA’s mission is to enrich cultural and educational opportunities in the community and surrounding areas by providing events for the public to collectively participate in fine art events and programs. Tuesdays: Haven House Domestic Violence Support Group for women whose lives have been touched by domestic violence. Topics include: Dynamics of Domestic Violence, Safety Plans, Developing Healthy Relationships, and information about available services. First Tuesdays: Albuquerque Newcomers Club Welcoming Coffee. Learn of the Club’s many varied activities. Membership open to residents who have lived in the Albuquerque area for five years or less, or who are having major changes in their lives. Third Tuesdays: Eastern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority (ESCAFCA) meets at 6 p.m. in the Town of Bernalillo Council Chambers. Second Wednesdays: Casa Rosa Mobile Food Pantry distribution. 10 a.m.-12 p.m., fellowship hall of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church, 7 Paseo de San Antonio, Placitas.  A Roadrunner truck will bring 2,500 pounds of food, approximately 50 pounds of food per family. All eligible Placitas residents welcome.

Saturdays: Casa Rosa Food Bank is open 9 a.m.-11 a.m. in the pink house east of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church on Highway 165, six miles east of I-25. This community outreach program provides nonperishable food items as well as dairy, frozen meats, and fresh produce as available for Placitas residents in need. Donations and volunteers welcome.

Fourth Saturdays: Sandia Vista Amateur Radio Club invites all area amateur radio operators to monthly meetings. 9 a.m. Do you want to help provide emergency communications in Placitas? Saturdays and Sundays:  Idalia Road Marketplace, Rio Rancho’s  open air market dedicated to local business, art, food and fun. Sundays through August: Haynes Park Summer Music and Art Series. 6:30-8 p.m. Haynes Park, 2006 Grande Boulevard. Featuring The Casuals, Gary Reynolds and The Southwest Band, Adobe Brothers, Bosque Blues, The Flyin A’s, Nahalot Shalom, Dennis and Song Writers, Rudy Boy Experiment, Twisted Mo-Jo, The Hit squad, Little Hawk, Inferno, and Rio Rancho Symphonic and Dance Bands. September 29: Las Placitas Association will hold their annual Fall Harvest Festival. 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Family fun, baked goods, garden produce, canned/preserved foods, and pumpkin or melon carving competitions for the kids. Entry is free, and everyone is encouraged to enter their best pie, cake, or bread, homemade mozzarella cheese, or canned pears; ribbons will be awarded. Judging begins at 2:00. Joe, "the Bee Guy," will give a talk about beekeeping, reps from Birds of the Placitas Open Space will talk about its bird nest box program and show you how to build your own. October 2: Gardening with the Masters—“Food Preservation.” 7-8:30 p.m. Held at the Meadowlark Senior Center, 4330 Meadowlark Lane, SE Rio Rancho. The event is free to the public. No reservation required.

October 5: Madras/ Cerrillos Tour. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. During this tour, visitors can see the artists in their studios, visit the many shops of Madrid and Cerrillos, and listen to music while dining at a fine local restaurant. Families can take children horseback riding along with other family events. For more information, call Jane Cassidy at 505-470-1346.

October 7: PAS hosts opening reception to present the art of Gail Gering, Kathaman, Roger Preston and Roxanne Bebee Blatz, and Shirley Ann Sloop. 2 p.m. Held at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. Their works will be on display from September 29 through October 28.

October 7: PAS presents the Jim-Greer Duo, Flute and Piano. 3 p.m. Held at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door one hour before the concert, or may be purchased in advance at The Merc Grocery Store in Homestead Village Shopping Center in Placitas; Ah! Capelli Salon & Color Studio in Enchanted Hills Plaza, Rio Rancho; Under Charlie’s Covers Bookstore at 120 E. Highway 550 in Bernalillo; or on-line at www.PlacitasArtistsSeries.org. Prices are $20 in advance. At the door prices for General Admission are twenty dollars and for students, 15 dollars.

October 5: opening reception for the Corrales Historical Society’s twenty-forth Old Church Fine Arts Show. 5-7 p.m. Held at the Old San Ysidro Church at 966 Old Church Road, across from Casa San Ysidro. The show will be on display from October 6 through October 13, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on October 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

October 13: Placitas Flea Market. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Homestead Village (next to the Merc), Highway 165, Placitas. Seller fees start at $10; proceeds benefit the Placitas Community Library. Call PJ at 771-1143 for more information.

October 13: Artist’s reception for Bob D’Alessandro and his exhibit Another Way of Living: Placitas, NM 1971 to 1975. 2-4 p.m. Held at the Placitas Community Library. Free of charge. October 13 & 14: The 9th Annual 26 Mile Trail Sale. A continuous yard sale along NM State Hwy 4 through the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway from San Ysidro to La Cueva. This two-day event is sponsored by local community members and is a yard sale shoppers' paradise. 575-834-0865 or www.jemezsprings.org.

October 20: Placitas Star Party. Public, family-friendly astronomical viewing event at the Placitas Community Library 6:30-10 p.m. Hosted by Las Placitas Association, Placitas Community Library, and Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS). Hot cider, biscochitos. Bring red flashlights or cover your white-light flashlight with red cellophane for better star viewing. Parking volunteers will direct you to park west of the library. All amateur and professional astronomers are welcome to set up telescopes (arrive before 6 p.m. to set up).

October 20: Fiesta of Cultures. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This will be a celebration of local traditions, including Pueblo, Hispanic, and Anglo. The emphasis is on craft demonstrations, folk art, and pre-industrial lifeways. Held at Coronado State Monument. No charge. For further information, call 505-867-5351.

October 22: Fundraiser for the Placitas Recycling Association. Come enjoy a delicious meal at the Range Cafe, 925 Camino Del Pueblo, Bernalillo, and twenty percent of your bill will be donated to support recycling services in the Placitas area. Tickets will be handed out all day in the Range Cafe lobby.

October 25: Basic composting class. 1-3 p.m. Held at Peña Blanca Community Center, 778 Hwy 22, Peña Blance, NM. To register, call 466-2652.

October 26: “Late night at the library.” 7-9:30 p.m. An evening of scary stories, games, and fun for children in grades three through five. Registration begins on October 9 at noon and is limited to forty children. November 17 and 18: 31st Annual Placitas Holiday Fine Arts & Crafts Sale, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eighty artists at three sites in the village of Placitas: 1) Anasazi Fields Winery 2) Big Tent next to Presbyterian Church 3) Placitas Elementary School, Painters, printmakers, clay and glass artists, wood workers, silk painters, photographers, gourd artists, jewelers, metal artists and more will bring their art to sell.
