What's the Word Around Town

This month’s question is: “Does Sandoval County serve its community well?” Here’s what people said:

Mary Gray

• “I think we’re pretty well-off in Rio Rancho. I had a house fire years ago and they did a great job then. I wish they would do something in Bernalillo about the traffic. I get stuck in it when I get off work. 528 moves pretty fast, but down the hill to Bernalillo crawls. It’s hard to get out of town. The cause is probably all the building; maybe they need a building moratorium.”
—MARY GRAY, STYLIST AT LA BONNE VIE SALON, PLACITAS.

• “Our roads in Placitas are not good. The bridge across Las Huertas Creek is still not finished. The police are doing a good job. The elementary school, which is only partly the county and mostly the Board of Education, is not good. They vastly underestimated the amount of time the construction would take. I feel sorry for those kids. They sat through the whole spring with all that noise; now they’re going back to the same thing.”

Andy

• “I think the police are stopping people too much at night. There is far more traffic in the daylight hours than at night, yet they stop more people after dark. They give out tickets for anything. I get off work late and I see them out there stopping people one after another.”

Cindy McCleary

• “We haven’t lived here long enough to really know how the county is. The roads are okay where we live and we haven’t had to call the police. So I wouldn’t know for sure, but they were helpful when we bought the house.”
—CINDY MCCLEARY (SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAVE LIVED IN PLACITAS FOR A FEW MONTHS.)

Steve Overton

• “I don’t pay income tax; I pay sales taxes, so I don’t know what the taxes are like, but the sales tax isn’t too bad. I don’t like the government raising taxes like the cigarette tax, but it’s not like New York or something, which is five bucks a pack. So I guess the county is doing a reasonable job. I don’t pay that much attention to it all, though,”
—STEVE OVERTON, OUTSIDE THE MERC

Pauline Lovato

• “I live in Rio Rancho. I think that it’s growing. I think that it’s doing really well. The roads in Rio Rancho are good. The traffic in Bernalillo just seems to be getting very congested. I guess it’s probably all the growth. Other than that, I think it’s pretty good.”
—PAULINE LOVATO, LIVES IN RIO RANCHO AND WORKS AT FIRST COMMUNITY BANK IN PLACITAS.
