Placitas Community Center September Events Calendar

The following activities are available daily Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. unless noted otherwise:

WEEKLY PROGRAMS

  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Chair exercises, 9:30-10:30 a.m. (exception: September 6)
  • Monday: Duplicate bridge, 12:30-4:30 p.m. (exception: September 6)
  • Tuesday: Painting class, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; Wii games, 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Project Linus, 10-11 a.m.; Cards, 1-1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Yoga, 9:30 -11 a.m.; Beading, 1- 4:30 p.m.
  • Friday: Scrabble, 9:30 a.m.

Special Classes/Events:

The Placitas Community/Senior center is open to all community member’s for classes offered at the site. Trips and meals are offered to all seniors age 60 and above.

New activities and trips scheduled for August and September are:

• Slumping of Glass: Glass fusing has grown rapidly in popularity over the past few years. The Placitas Community Center is offering a class in the slumping of glass on August 12 at 1:00 p.m. and on August 13 to pick up your work at 10:00 a.m. Supplies needed are a clean bottle (remove labels and glue).

• On August 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Placitas Volunteer Fire Department has volunteered their time to come to the Placitas Community Center and give free health checks to senior citizens age 60+. The health checks will consist of the following: Blood pressure, lung sound, 02 Sat., blood glucose. No reservations are necessary. (These checks are scheduled once each month, on the third Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

• On August 21, the Center will host a Community Rummage/Craft Sale from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Homemade breakfast burritos will be available from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at a cost of $3.00 each. Water and sodas are $.50 each. Monies from the sale of food will be used for Senior Citizens functions. Cost for six-foot table space for senior clients is $5.00 and non-seniors is $10.00 per table space. (There are limited tables available, so you may be asked to bring your own table). For table space and/or information, call Janice or Marylou at the Center, 867-1396.

• In September, a trip to The Georgia O’Keefe Landscape Tour will be scheduled. Departure from the Center will be at 8:30 a.m. and you will return at 5:00 p.m. A $3.00 transportation donation is suggested. Lunch will be on your own. Those interested should contact Janice or Marylou at the Center to register (867-1396) and pay the cost of $25.00 per senior, by August 17. The payment is non-refundable.

September 3: Chinese herbalist (must have an appointment), 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

September 6: Closed in observation of Labor Day

September 7: Good eating habits with R.N. Adelle, 12:30 p.m.

September 9: Wellness presentation, 12:15 p.m.

September 10: Yoga, 10:30-11:30 a.m.; photography class, 1-3 p.m.

September 14: Computer class, 9-11:30 a.m.; fused glass group, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

September 16: Health checks, 11 a.m.

September 17: Chinese herbalist (must have an appointment), 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

September 20: Hair appointments, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

September 30: Advisory board meeting, 9:30 a.m.; birthday social, 11:30 a.m.

September 6: Closed for Labor Day

September 7: Ham and cheese sandwich, lettuce leaf, sliced tomato, carrot and raisin salad, tropical fruit, cookie

September 8: Meat loaf with gravy, scalloped potatoes, Capri vegetables, spinach salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, baked apple slices

September 9: Pork chop, mashed potatoes with gravy, island vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, fresh pineapple

September 10: Red chili beef enchilada, pinto beans, summer squash, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cantaloupe

September 13: Turkey tetrazzini, winter vegetables, garden salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, honeydew

September 14: Lasagna, Italian vegetables, Caesar salad with dressing, garlic toast, fruit with Jell-O

September 15: Pork posole, spinach, garden salad with dressing, tortilla, watermelon

September 16: Two cheese pizza, green beans, tossed salad with dressing, apple

September 17: Hard shell taco with salsa, Spanish rice, country vegetables, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, strawberries and bananas

September 20: Smothered beef and cheese burrito, refried beans, zucchini and onions, spinach salad with dressing, banana

September 21: Baked ham, sweet potatoes, broccoli, garden salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, mandarin oranges

September 22: Baked chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, spinach, tossed salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, orange

September 23: Frito pie, pinto beans, Monte Carlo vegetables, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, applesauce

September 24: Chicken strips with honey mustard, potato wedges with catsup, Scandinavian vegetables, garden salad with dressing, biscuit with margarine, cantaloupe

September 27: Green chile cheese burger, coleslaw, lettuce and tomatoes, pickles and onion, grapes, cookie

September 28: Parmesan chicken, spaghetti noodles, green beans, Caesar salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, mandarin oranges

September 29: Chile con carne with beans, country vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, cornbread with margarine, strawberries, cookie

September 30: Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, Brussels sprouts, spinach salad with dressing, whole wheat roll with margarine, apricots

Milk is served with each meal. Canned fruit is in light syrup.
