Story time at Esther Bone Library

Story time for children ages three through six will resume on September 4, at the Esther Bone Memorial Library in Rio Rancho. Due to the library’s new hours, this thirty-minute program of stories, songs, poetry, puppets, jokes, and finger plays will now be held on Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. The fall session will run from September 4 through December 18. Three-year-old children must to be accompanied by an adult. Children ages four to six may attend the program alone. For more information, call 891-5012, ext. 4 or visit the Esther Bone Memorial Library (www.riorancholibraries.org) at 950 Pinetree Road, SE. Registration is not required for this free program.

Scouts win trophy

“Commissioner Orlando Lucero saw the cub scouts at the Placitas Independence Day Parade and invited us to the Sheriff’s Posse Parade,” says Cub Master David Gardner. “Our bicycle formations won the First Place Sportsmanship Trophy.” The day was filled with a Bike Rodeo before the parade and a barbeque afterwards.

More fun is coming for Cub Scout Pack 708 in September. They will take advantage of the state’s Free Fishing Day and travel up to Jemez to see what fish might be biting. They also will have a swimming and cookout day this month.

The annual popcorn fundraiser will be held in September. Profits from these fundraisers have paid the fare for all of the cub scouts able to attend the local Boy Scout day-camps during the summer and help pay for dues and other scouting costs.

Next month, working with the Coronado Optimist Club, Pack 708 will be collecting canned goods for their annual Thanksgiving baskets. They are now looking for sites for their yellow-papered collection boxes.

“This has been a great summer for Cub Scout Pack 708. We made a radio commercial for the Boy Scouts, won a trophy, had lots of outdoor adventures and now were heading back to school,” says Mr. Gardner.

The Pack meets after school on Wednesdays for Bernalillo and Carroll Elementary Schools, and after school on Fridays for Placitas Elementary School. Pack 708 continues to recruit additional boys from Bernalillo, Placitas, and northern Rio Rancho. For more Pack information, contact David Gardner at 867-4689.
